Understanding school violence
School violence takes place in the context of frightening overall levels of violence in South African society, and a few minutes browsing through the South African Police Services (SAPS) crime statistics gives an insight into the scale of the problem.

For the period April 2007 to March 2008 there were 18,487 reported murders; 36,190 reported rapes; 118,312 reported robberies and 210,104 reported assaults with intent to inflict grievous bodily harm, and children are not shielded from this violence.
A 2008 report from the Centre for Justice and Crime Prevention on violent crimes against children between 2004 and 2008 found that there had been a significant increase in the murder of children between 2006/2007 and 2007/2008.
