Office software goes prepaid

Microsoft is offering a prepaid version of its 2007 Office suite to make the software accessible to anyone unable to afford it, including emerging businesses.

01 August 2007

The 2007 Office Prepaid edition of Microsoft's Office suite will be available to new computer buyers in South Africa and Romania. When buying a new PC or laptop – the user has the option of pre-installing the suite at a minimal upfront price. This will provide the full functionality of Microsoft Office Professional 2007 for six months, three months on an evaluation basis and another three months on a subscription licence.

Once the initial six-month period has ended, the user may return to where the computer was purchased and buy a three-month prepaid voucher to continue using the suite. If the software is not renewed, it goes into a reduced functionality mode. While users would still be able to view and print files, they would not be able to modify existing documents or create and save new ones.
