Huawei strides past Apple’s iOS

In just five years, Huawei has managed to claw together a larger share of the market than Microsoft did in over 15.

Huawei has had a tough decade. Branded a national security risk by the US government in 2012, the Chinese mobile telecommunications giant has been banned or quietly squeezed out of infrastructure markets in dozens of countries. When, in 2019, it was effectively blocked from using the Android operating system in its smartphones, many analysts (including me) predicted the company would never fully recover.

On May 25, Counterpoint Research announced that Huawei's HarmonyOS had overtaken Apple's iOS as the second most popular operating system (OS) in China, behind Android. The report claims that HarmonyOS now accounts for 4% of the global market – double its share compared to last year.
