Music industry 2.0

The record label is being reinvented. You can now buy any music online - even without iTunes.

05 February 2009

We get it. Sales of recorded music are falling. Obviously, this affects developed markets more than developing markets such as South Africa. Overall, music sales slipped ten percent, and things have been this bad (or worse) since 2000.

On the plus side, the sale of digital music has soared by 40 percent year-on-year – although this isn’t nearly enough to make up for the slump in physical album sales. Worldwide, digital music accounts for over 15 percent of sales of recorded music. In the US, this figure is 30 percent of industry sales. Not so in South Africa.
