Beware the DIY will

Although an uncomfortable topic for discussion, having a will is one of the most important things you can do for your loved ones.

According to a report based on 2022 statistics from the Master of the High Court of South Africa, less than 15% of South Africans have a will. And while no one likes to think about death, it’s advisable to put measures in place so that you have a say in how your assets are distributed.

Carin Meyer, product head for deceased banking at FNB Fiduciary, says putting one’s wishes in writing will leave little room for interpretation, and mitigates the risk of fraud. A well-drafted will also minimises the chance of delays in the process of administering the estate, she adds.
