War-time energy saver gets eco makeover
During the Second World War, in an attempt to reduce the crippling demand that was being placed on cooking and heating materials, the British government made a conscientious effort to introduce the notion of hay-box cooking to the people of Britain.

This initiative ensured a substantial saving in the energy sources that were becoming scarce. Sound familiar?
Cape-based startup, The HotBox Co., has stylishly redesigned the old hay-box concept. The Hotbox cooker, which looks a bit like two moulded cushions placed one on top of the other, works on the simple concept that trapped heat keeps on cooking trapped food - for free. This retained heat cooking is simple and ingeniously effective. The ‘two boxes’ are cleverly constructed using an outer layer of cotton fabric, sewn into panels that keep the square shape and create an inner space in which to nestle your pot. Insulation is facilitated by recycled polystyrene fill material.
