Questioning corporate Aids programmes

Every year international mining companies are presented with awards in recognition of their contributions in the fight against HIV/Aids.

In a 2005 report, Anglo American reported being awarded the UK’s Business in the Community International Award for contributions towards the achievement of the UN’s Millennium Development Goals in Africa, of which reducing HIV/Aids is one of the eight goals.

In South Africa, Anglo Platinum was awarded the South African Khomanani Excellence Award for its community HIV/Aids programme. In April 2006, Creamer Media’s Mining Weekly reported that BHP Billiton “had recently won the Global Business Coalition on HIV/ Aids award for its efforts in the prevention and treatment of HIV/Aids”. The list of other similar awards is endless.
