History lesson

Back when personal computers had proven themselves to be of some use, a problem soon arose: as nice as DOS was, it couldn`t multitask. Multitasking was a function that early PC users soon realised they needed and one that developers placed on top of the pile of priorities in operating system development. Hardware was adapted for the task and some clever companies, like Borland, released terminate and stay resident (TSR) programs that provided users with the ability to switch between whatever they were running in DOS and a selection of calculators, calendars and other useful tools.
