Sitting under a tree that served as her school, in her homeland close to the Swaziland border, Poppy Tshabalala could never imagine she would one day be the CIO of a large government enterprise like the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI).

Tshabalala's first few years of schooling were spent trying to listen to the teacher while birds chirped and the hot sun enticed the children to come and play.
