Hands off the corporation

MOST OF THE IMPORTANT ECONOMIC decisions to be made by the modern economy are now delegated, by almost all governments, to the privately-owned business enterprise.

It is very important to emphasise the primary economic purpose of the firm: it is there to address the economic problem on behalf of society at large.

Its function, therefore, is not to resolve what may be the psychological or spiritual problems of its workforce, except to the extent that addressing such issues helps make the firm more successful in the narrow economic sense of that term. A loving workplace may well prove to be more productive than a less loving one and if so successful firms will embrace love as a business tool. Firms in competition with each other will become more considerate, if this works to the advantage of their owners. Emulation of the best, meaning the most profitable, practice is a constant preoccupation of modern businesses.
