Africa’s digital future is, surprisingly, manual.

Learning to code without a computer may sound strange, but today, there are a number of unplugged coding methods. Locally, Tangible Africa is leading the way. It’s a project run between the Leva Foundation and Nelson Mandela University (NMU), and it all started with an Honour’s project, says Jackson Tshabalala, Tangible Africa’s engagement manager.
“A student named Byron Batteson, now a software development engineer, created something called Tanks, which introduces coding to learners without the use of computers or the internet in a fun, gamified way,” he says. “While we no longer use Tanks, we now have Rangers and Boats.
