Connecting the unconnectable

Africa has widely publicised problems with internet connectivity, which a number of international players are making efforts to tackle. But the solution may be closer to home, designed and engineered in Nairobi.

The BRCK, originally conceived by Kenyan crowd-mapping company Ushahidi, is a rugged, self-powered, mobile WiFi device. It can connect users to the internet in areas with poor power and broadband infrastructure, with the modem-cum-router allowing for internet connectivity even when the power is out.
