News that US online retailer Amazon.com is to establish a software development centre in Cape Town has come at a time when the local software industry is doing some serious navel-gazing.

While the SA software engineering industry is desperately looking for flagship projects that would showcase its skills to the world, the fact remains that the country is struggling to build capacity through the education and training of sufficient programmers and engineers.
