The material comfort that comes with accumulating wealth makes it easy to set up some kind of philanthropic organisation that benefits the social good. History has numerous examples of this. The early academies of ancient Greece flourished under the patronage of wealthy individuals.
More recent examples have been the establishment of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, with the founder of Microsoft funding a cure for malaria and other diseases that affect developing countries.
