Antarctica gets airwaves

A collaboration between the arts and sciences in the Antarctic is laying the groundwork for the first polar community radio station and providing a boost to researchers by creating a mobile renewable energy unit which doubles as a bivouac.

Registered in South Africa as a non-profit organisation but with a global coterie of about 30 engineers, scientists, designers and audio-visual artists, the Interpolar Transnational Art Science Constellation (I-TASC) has assembled and tested the Umthombo Womlilo (well of fire) mobile renewable energy unit, which is capable of producing 2,4 kW of electricity through the use of photovoltaic panels and a wind turbine.

I-TASC also plans to expand radio broadcasts on the cold continent to include all 15 geographically dispersed Antarctic bases. The first radio broadcasts at South Africa’s Sanae IV base were made during the team’s 2006/2007 summer expedition.
