All hail the new kids in town

South Africa’s public transport scene is vastly different from years past, as ride-hailing services have cemented their position, while continuing to grow in number, and innovation.

Competition in South Africa’s e-hailing market is heating up, with two new players looking to bulldoze Uber and Bolt. The market has come a long way from the initial days of resistance by meter-taxi drivers, as app-based e-hailing services are now part and parcel of the local public transport system.

San Francisco-based Uber was, of course, the first to disrupt the metered taxis’ business model when it launched here in August 2013. It paved the way for Bolt, Russia’s inDriver, as well as a few local players, who, unlike their international counterparts, received less traction.
