Many years ago, my team discovered that a supplier had suffered a serious security breach, and its business data had been siphoned off and dumped on the dark web. The supplier was completely unaware, because it didn’t have the right tooling to detect it. Until, that is, I called the CEO to tell him that his company’s data had been stolen.
A week later, my then-CEO and the supplier’s CEO sat down to a very uncomfortable conversation. As we walked out of the meeting, the supplier said this was the first conversation he’d ever had about cybersecurity, adding: “I wish I’d had that conversation earlier."
