Sun-powered schools

Think of schools as miniature renewable power stations, plastered with solar panels generating electricity that could be fed back into the national grid or used by surrounding communities.

With schools closed during periods of peak residential usage and school holidays, turning them into solar energy hubs could help solve energy shortages and generate cash for resource-strapped schools.

This vision of the future was one of the ideas mooted at the launch of the first solar-powered computer laboratory in the Western Cape at Bernadino Heights Secondary School in Kraaifontein in August.
