As construction continues on the dishes of the Square Kilometre Array deep in the Karoo, there is also research being done around big data, and how it is all going to be processed.

With his knack for understatement, Dr Jasper Horrell, the general manager: science computing and innovation at SKA South Africa, says the telescope generates “a lot” of data.
Speaking at the Dell Solutions Tour in Johannesburg recently, Horrell said the Meerkat radio telescope is now being built. When complete, it will be a 64 dish system, and they are now up to 15 dishes.
