Keeping the sea at bay
Increased intensity of storms, rising sea levels and the melting of the polar ice caps are scenarios that could have dramatic consequences for future development along Cape Town’s 307km of coastline.

Preliminary results of a study commissioned by the City of Cape Town that examines the future impact of sea-level rise caused by human-induced climate change, shows that sea-level rise is likely to have major implications for services, infrastructure, future development and existing property in the coastal zone.
The initial results of the assessment were presented to the City of Cape Town’s planning and environment portfolio committee in May by Lucinda Fairhurst from consultants Laquar.
