QR codes: Rising star in South Africa's digital space
QR codes remain a small part of digital interactions in South Africa. But a shift in payment standards and marketing platforms could change that.

In some countries, QR codes are almost ubiquitous. Estimates vary between 40 million and 100 million scans during 2024 of these square successors to barcodes, covering use cases from marketing and promotions to logistics to making payments. According to a report from QR Tiger, the US leads Western markets in both the number of QR scans and the creation of QR codes, while emerging markets such as India are also strong adopters.
China leads the world in QR code usage. According to QRCodeChimp, QR codes account for 90% of China's mobile payments, where there are over 10 billion devices capable of scanning the information- rich barcode inspired by the board game Go.
