Six years after deciding to move to digital TV and turn off the outdated analogue broadcast, the ‘go live’ day is finally here.

South Africa will launch digital terrestrial television commercially next month (November), a process that has taken several years to come to fruition. It has also been marred by umpteen delays.

The switch to digital television, using the upgraded European DVB-T2 standard, will open up a world of new content but – perhaps more importantly – will free up spectrum at the lower end of the range. As many as 16 channels can fit into one signal frequency.
