Is the metaverse just sci-fi for Africa?

A great deal more must be done technologically in Africa before the continent can truly leverage online virtual worlds.

Altron Karabina’s Collin Govender believes local users should have their metaverse experiences shaped by local realities.

The term ‘metaverse’ has quickly become everyday technology parlance, especially about futuristic scenarios. Mark Zuckerberg believes it to be the future of the internet and has pushed his company’s offer of an immersive digital experience for everyone, one in which we don’t go ‘on the internet’, we actually ‘live in the internet.’

But the concept isn’t new and was coined in 1992 by American science fiction novelist Neal Stephenson in his book Snow Crash.
