On the spot: Have government’s BPO efforts failed?

Much has been made of government’s efforts to promote SA as a business process outsourcing destination. The jury is still out on its success.

Government has identified business process outsourcing (BPO) as a growth area, one that could result in large numbers of jobs being created. It has made an effort to incentivise local call-centre players, and promote the country as a destination. Has it succeeded or failed?

✹ When SourcingLine completed a study measuring the attractiveness of various countries as BPO destinations, South Africa scored 4.6 – lower than Vietnam, Ghana, Lithuania and Jamaica. Drilling down to the reasons, costs and IT infrastructure were deterrents.
