MultiChoice pins hopes on Showmax
Facing competition from Netflix, MultiChoice ramps up local content.

MultiChoice used to enjoy a monopoly in Africa’s pay-TV market, but, facing pressure on several fronts, it is now pinning its hopes on video streaming platform Showmax. Subscribers have been deserting its DStv platform in droves, and the company has had to diversify its revenue streams.
MultiChoice’s latest financial results for the year ending in March showed a 9% drop in active subscribers, while its businesses in Nigeria, Angola and Zambia saw a 13% decrease. The South African business was more resilient, only declining by 5%.
