Mobile applications have become everybody’s business. For South African companies wanting their own apps, there are several options to consider, starting with: do you really, really need one?

Apple launched its App Store for the iPhone in 2008 and created an explosion in mobile software development. In the three years since then, the iTunes store has grown to contain over 300 000 iOS applications. Competitors like Google, Research in Motion (RIM) and Nokia were quick to replicate the App Store for their own products and there are now at least three platforms being targeted by developers in a big way.

Similarly to when the World Wide Web first gained mainstream traction and businesses clambered to ‘get online’, there is a rush to develop mobile applications specific to companies and brands.
