Fairtrade farming movement set to grow

At the end of a tar road in the luscious mountain farming region of Grabouw one hour outside of Cape Town, Ernest Fredericks has spent the last 25 years turning over soil, planting seeds and watching things grow.

For Fredericks, times have never been better. In the 1990s he remembers earning as little as R70 a week, but now Vuki Farm where he works is worker- owned and managed and has its own clinic and a creche.

Vuki Farm is one of 170 in Africa that are accredited under the Fairtrade labelling system. This system guarantees that produce from the farm is produced under sound working and environmental conditions and pays a premium on produce.
