Young Mom Support, a non-profit organisation launched in 2010, is based in the Western Cape and headed up by Tracy Engelbrecht. It runs regular meetings for teens and young mothers in the Fish Hoek region. These casual group meetings don’t provide formal counselling services, but aim to empower young mothers by providing a safe space in which to share their experiences, learn more about parenting techniques and access necessary referral information on more support mechanisms for themselves and their families.

Recent media reports have highlighted the teen pregnancy rate in South Africa. In March 2013, South African Minister of Health, Dr Aaron Moatseledi, announced that 94 000 schoolgirls fell pregnant during 2011. So, maternal health services that focus on youth are now more important than ever before.
