Many rural patients in South Africa have to travel long distances to receive primary healthcare from academic hospitals, as there is a distinct lack of specialist services in rural areas. While this need for specialist medical services at the district hospitals and clinics is one that has been recognised, the practical implementation of a solution to this problem has taken time.
