"Because of technological developments, there is no longer any difference in the transmission of voice, video and data; therefore it is no longer necessary to prohibit the provision of voice by Vans."

With these words, Communications Minister Ivy Matsepe-Casaburri set in motion the events that ultimately led to the legalisation of voice-over Internet protocol (VOIP) on 1 February this year, causing many players in the local ICT industry to begin licking their lips at the prospect of cheaper call rates and true competition for telecoms monopoly Telkom.
