The public sector is an integral part of a world that is rapidly changing. Governments and both public and private sector institutions are increasingly using technology to improve their performance and reach. This process, dubbed digital transformation, has the potential to exponentially improve user experiences, security, operational processes, business models and innovation. As a result, digital transformation is now no longer a nice-to-have, but an imperative.

In South Africa, digital transformation provides government with opportunities for enhanced user experiences and efficiencies. This is ultimately to save costs, provide better service delivery, have readily available and accurate data upon which to budget and make decisions, reduce poverty and unemployment, upskill or reskill people to become future-fit to take advantage of opportunities across the globe for catalysing economic growth, and, most importantly, to establish closer ties to citizens through positive value-add. The objective is to use technology not just to replicate an existing service in a digital form, but as an enabler to transform that service into something significantly better and with scale for specific benefit.
