NFV: The missing piece of the 5G puzzle

Network functions virtualisation is a complex operation, but it’s a journey that telcos must take.

There’s been plenty of talk over the years about software-defined networking and network functions virtualisation (NFV), but what’s not clear is the level of adoption, at least in South Africa.

Brainstorm approached a number of our large telecommunications service providers, and no one was willing to go on record. Although becoming truly software-defined will deliver real competitive advantages, it appears that the telcos are still grappling with the technology, and are probably still near the beginning of the journey. They’re also getting to grips with cloud-native infrastructure, and are exploring the benefits this will bring.
