John Bright was involved in the IT industry for ten years before founding UCS Group in 1978, listing the company on the JSE in September 1998. The company started as a bureau and is now an international, billion-rand software solutions organisation specialising in the retail industry. In the context of the overall SA IT industry, R1-billion in turnover may not sound like much, but 80 percent of that is generated from its own products and services.

In August, UCS made a move into the financial services sector with the acquisition of Computer Software Consultants (CSC) for R67.6 million.
