The weakest link

The communal use of shared accounts and passwords puts your organisation at serious risk.

20 May 2022

Many large companies are carrying a significant hidden risk: badly secured digital assets. Hundreds of millions of rands worth of these assets are currently reachable via the public internet, protected by shoddy passwords, often shared by dozens of people.

If this sounds like an exaggeration, let's consider, for example, a corporate social media channel. Many companies have spent considerable effort and expense on growing their social media presence. An official Facebook page with 100 000 followers is worth at least R500 000 at replacement value (the effort and expense required to rebuild from scratch). And that's before you account for potential reputational damage, ransom demands or the theft of customer information if a page is hijacked.
