What is the South African experience of smart cities?

Smart cities have been spoken about for at least three decades, an early example being Amsterdam, which created De Digitale Stad, or The Digital City, in 1994, to make the internet more accessible to the general public. Some cities are clearly more advanced than others, and the OECD says Copenhagen, Amsterdam, Beijing and Seoul are among the very best. It adds that only 1% of IoT data collected worldwide is being utilised at the moment. There has been much talk about smart cities in South Africa, such as in Lanseria, but to date, there’s been no development. What’s holding smart cities back?
