Global climate deal edges closer
The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCC) has hailed the latest round of climate change talks held in Accra, Ghana in August, as marking another step towards an international climate change deal.
11 February 2009
Over 1,600 delegates took part in the meeting, held between 21 – 27 August, which forms part of a negotiating process that will be concluded in Copenhagen at the end of 2009.
The UNFCC secretariat said discussions had taken place on reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation in developing countries. It is seen as important that this forms part of any Copenhagen deal because emissions from deforestation account for 20% of global greenhouse gas emissions.
