The Covid-19 pandemic has impacted all industries and sectors, but the public sector – with its need to deliver services to citizens and also ensure that the basic functioning of the state continues – has been hit particularly hard.

One of the biggest challenges the public sector has faced during the pandemic has been the fact that in many instances, its state of digital readiness has not been good enough to respond effectively to the changes brought about by Covid-19.

Government has faced numerous challenges with regard to employees working from home, says Michael Langeveld, Huawei’s vice president for Cloud Africa. These include dealing with high demand of online service requests from an ever-growing online community, the ability to process large volumes of digital data and the provision of alternative digital channels to ensure service continuity over the traditional queue-based system.
