The SA Bureau of Standards (SABS) has approved Open Document Format (ODF) as a national standard, which means Microsoft isn`t out of the running for public sector business.

The SABS has approved Microsoft's ODF as a national standard, which means the software company isn't out of the running for public sector business.

Open standards allow government to control how information is stored and distributed among institutional systems, making proprietary software less appealing. But Dr Daniel Mashao, State Information Technology Agency CTO and member of the Government Working Committee on Open Source, says this does not prevent Microsoft from competing in the public sector.
