The remarkable thing about MiX Telematics, which started off life as vehicle-tracking service Matrix, is that it’s become an altogether different company than its traditional competitors. Karooooo (owner of Cartrack), now headquartered in Singapore, Altron’s Netstar and Tracker are all still primarily focused on that narrow niche (Karooooo has started expanding into adjacent verticals).

Today, MiX Telematics is almost entirely focused on fleet management, with over a million subscribers and 130 channel partners across 120 countries. It reached this milestone earlier this year, something CEO Stefan Joselowitz describes as “significant”. It’s been growing rapidly – at the end of June last year, it hadn’t even reached 840 000 subscribers.
