There’s an abundance of engineering talent in Africa that needs to be nurtured; growing the next wave of first-class African engineers is the guiding principle behind the founding of Deimos.
Positioning the company as a multicloud strategy and solutions partner, Deimos’ CEO and founder, Andrew Mori, points out that his goal is to build an organisation of African engineering excellence, to assist businesses build and develop within the cloud. “When one considers the complexities of adopting the cloud, including issues such as best practices, security, and observability, we find that too often, companies make decisions that result in failed cloud projects, which impact overall business success. Our goal is to help them adopt the cloud in the right manner ensuring their business succeeds,” he says.
“Deimos believes in aiding businesses in ways that suits them best, rather than trying to push a specific product, which is why we offer a multicloud strategy. We have chosen to work with Huawei Cloud not only because it is a market leader and a major cloud provider, but also because Huawei leans into open source and enables us to offer our clients the kind of cloud agnosticism they demand.”
He adds that Deimos is confident about taking this offering to its customers because it has strong security embedded within, which, when coupled with the consistent innovation coming out of Huawei, Huawei Cloud South Africa’s parent company in China, means it’s the ideal product to sell to business customers.
“As engineers ourselves, we’re well aware of the incredible engineering excellence to be found in the Huawei cloud, and with the fantastic synergy we have with Huawei itself, we are well positioned to ensure our customers can fully and properly leverage the benefits of the Huawei Cloud.”
Enormous benefits
Deimos’ CLO and Head of Reseller, David Anderson, notes that in the current economy, cost-efficiencies are a huge consideration for most clients. “There is not a single conversation we have with customers, where the issue of cost is not raised at some point” he says.
“Customers worry about this even more than security, and we’re regularly asked about the cost of a cloud deployment at list price. It is here that Huawei’s Cloud enters in the conversation, and given the enormous benefits clients obtain from it, this solution is priced exceptionally well.”
Moreover, he continues, there is no trade-off in terms of availability or security measures to receive a lower price point. Instead, customers quickly realise that the services they receive from Huawei’s cloud are at a similar level to other providers, but at a much more reasonable cost.
Mori suggests that proving the cost-effectiveness of the Huawei Cloud is relatively simple. Because Huawei offers free proof of concepts (PoCs) to customers, Deimos can take a client’s specific workload and run it in the cloud, providing them with an actualised view of the cost.
“We know that Huawei competes comfortably when it comes to performance, security, and scalability. But for us, the best demonstration of its value is to take a client workload, redeploy it in the Huawei Cloud, and then demonstrate the performance and related cost savings,” he says.
“This is ideal for most of our clients who play in the fintech space and regularly face cost pressures. Once we can demonstrate that this is a competitive offering at a better price point, they have no qualms about migrating, because they are aware of the amount Huawei has invested in security and performance.” Ultimately, says Anderson, the Huawei Cloud suits Deimos’ customers by delivering benefits to all areas of their businesses. “Our clients’ engineers and CTOs find the developer experience and usability to be pleasant, the CFOs recognise its great price point, and their legal departments, for whom data sovereignty is vital, find that the physical data centres being in-country is especially appealing.”
Tsailou Lin, Director: Ecosystem Partner Development at Huawei Cloud South Africa, believes the partnership is a perfect fit because the businesses have the same values.
“To improve their service further, we offer marketing support, alongside fully funded certified training. We also undertake free proof-of-concept trials as a value add, to ensure the end-customer can see how the cloud works and that it delivers the value they demand,” she says. “Deimos has strong technical skills and the company is cloudnative, so they remain a valuable partner to us in terms of what they can offer. This partnership is growing rapidly, and we are excited to assist them with their go-to-market strategy in other parts of Africa as well.”
Mori notes that Deimos’ focus lies on making it easier for its clients to operate in the cloud.
“Our end-customers are generally not technology businesses - they are not selling technology so much as products - which is why they often struggle to leverage the cloud in the best possible way. This really is the premise for our existence: helping our customers to utilise the Huawei Cloud in the best possible manner. This is also the reason we are excited about our relationship with Huawei; they are partnering with us to help us solve the tangible challenges our customers are facing,” he concludes.
