The race to space

Big tech firms are prioritising filling the blank spots on the globe’s map of connectivity via Low-Earth Orbit satellites.

24 March 2021

It’s not hard to work out why tech giants are launching satellites as quick as they can make them: it’s the next frontier for connectivity. There are at least four companies all trying to do the same thing, but it’s Amazon’s Jeff Bezos, through his Kuiper project, and SpaceX’s Elon Musk, who are seen as frontrunners.

SpaceX has already launched over 1 000 satellites for its Starlink internet service, and it’s being used in early release by over 10 000 customers in remote areas of the US, the UK and Canada. And if you’re keen, it looks like applications have opened for South African users too, with the firm aiming to provide coverage here next year.
