Seagate unleashes “monster” drive

With a 750GB drive now out, capacity for desktops is nearing the terabyte mark.

01 June 2006

Desktop storage took another massive leap forward last month when Seagate unveiled the Barracuda 7200.10. It is the first standard-size desktop hard disk drive (HDD) to offer 750GB of storage capacity – a 50 percent increase on the company`s previous high-water mark of 500GB.

According to the company, the big jump was made possible by using perpendicular recording technology, in which data bits are stood vertically on disk media, rather than horizontally. This, the company says, “delivers new levels of HDD data density, capacity and reliability”.
