Child malnutrition warning

Every day five children in south Africa die of malnutrition, and with food sources under threat from climate change, this figure is expected to rise dramatically by 2050.

According to University of Cape Town’s Dr Gina Ziervogel, a climate systems researcher who was addressing a climate change conference held at Kirstenbosch in July, climate change would affect the availability, access and utilisation of food in South Africa.

Precipitation and extreme weather events were all linked to climate change and could ultimately impact on the availability and price of food.
