Looting or service delivery?

In times of a pandemic that’s affecting many physically and economically, politicians seem more concerned with self-enrichment than getting us out of this mess.

A friend recently shared a tweet asking: Is nothing sacred in South Africa? She was referring to the Digital Vibes saga involving health minister Dr Zweli Mkhize and one of the most mind-boggling cases of Covid-19 looting to date. I wonder what would happen if our publicly elected officials were as concerned with ensuring South Africans receive the most basic of services, as they are with looting state funds.

The country is now in a Covid-19 third wave. The daily cases continue to rise and breached the 9 000 mark, as of 10 June. Meanwhile, the number of administered vaccines is nowhere near enough for the collective immunity needed, with the amount of people who have received the vaccine reported to be just over 1.5 million. Many of us still remain in the dark about many things because getting clear communication from government is challenging, to say the least, and I say that as someone whose job it is to get information from government on a regular basis. On top of the tight lips, the promise of digitally capable health tools to get to grips with this virus has been desperately wanting.
