Telecoms the saviour

The cost of bandwidth in Africa poses a barrier to the continent`s effective participation in international trade and the knowledge economy, while limiting local markets and education.

Helen King, CEO of the Shuttleworth Foundation, is adamant that the lack of adequate bandwidth is putting Africa at risk of being left behind in the global race. She cites affordable, high-speed bandwidth as an essential component for growth and vital to attracting international investment.

“International companies dependent on electronic communications to run their businesses cannot move into local markets if there is not sufficient and affordable bandwidth available. This is holding local markets back as they are limited in terms of their participation in the global economy.”
