Two months ago, a T&Cs update shook the creative world. It started with a pop-up on the screens of the 30 million or so people who use Adobe’s cloud-hosted tools. If you wanted to use the software, it stated, you must accept the new terms, which allowed Adobe access to your content using automated and manual means. Upon closer inspection, the terms granted such far-ranging rights that it would have free reign to reuse whatever users were working on.

The thunderclap response was immediate, with complaints including, “what about my confidential client projects?” and “if you sell me a pencil, you don’t get to own my drawings”.
