Catching the bus

The South American city of Bogota has blazed the trail in establishing a public transport system that reclaims the city for people, not cars.

Former Bogota mayor Enrique Penalosa is a legend in his own lunchtime. Armed with designer stubble, and a Clintonian swoosh of silvery hair, he cuts a fine figure of a man. He is the man who in a remarkably short period of time transformed the Columbian capital’s transport system from one of chaos and degradation to one based on the no-less legendary ‘BRT’ – Bus Rapid Transit.
