The Toyota RAV4 is one of the more popular HEVs on the market.

Electric vehicles get more attention than hybrid vehicles in South Africa, yet only make up between 10% and 12% of new energy vehicle (NEV) sales annually. In 2022, there were 502 EVs sold compared to the 4 172 hybrids, whereas in 2023, EV sales grew to 931 compared to the 6 817 hybrids, according to Naamsa. Naamsa reports NEV stats quarterly and annually, which are broken into traditional hybrid vehicles (HEVs), plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) and battery electric vehicles (BEVs).

Figures for the first half of 2024 indicate another record, with a total of 7 179 NEVs sold from January to June, of which 6 430 are fully hybrid, making up 89.5% of sales. For the same period in 2023, there were 3 206 NEVs sold.
