2010 panic takes hold

A glimpse at what is being done for the upcoming FIFA World Cup in Germany struck terror into the hearts of those who`ll end up having to do the same – and more – right here for 2010. While Sentech now plays down the fear, the upside is that it panicked early.

01 June 2006

Back in 1954, the inaugural FIFA World Cup, held in Bern, Switzerland, attracted less than 100 million viewers, using perhaps four million black-and-white televisions.

It`s 52 years later and the stakes are rather higher. Up to 20 000 media representatives are expected – 15 times more than in 1954. Many of them will be working for one of the 300 television networks that are bringing the event to 1.5 billion people (or as many as 5.6 billion if you count like a marketing droid) in over 200 countries.
