Cape Town café society

The gentrification of Cape Town`s city centre has led to much talk of creating an idyllic café society à la Paris or New York, likely to be able to justify the inflated price of inner city lofts now selling in the millions. Architects and would-be café owners in search of inspiration may want to look to the Lazari Food Gallery in Vredehoek.

Irrepressible owner, Christopher Lazari, who is almost always in attendance to greet you with a nod of recognition if you`ve been more than once, defected from the IT industry a year and a bit ago to start the café. He says, "It wasn`t that big a leap. Growing up, my family owned a Greek corner deli."

He designed the very reasonably priced menu (as well as the interior), to feature an ensemble of delicious things. The roasted chilli butternut warm salad with couscous and blue cheese is a favourite. Christopher says, "It`s the divinest thing ever," and even non-vegetarians like me are forced to agree. Also worth mentioning is the Thai chicken wrap, stuffed to spill-over and suffused with tangy flavour, and the eggs Benedict with home-made hollandaise sauce.
